Walmart Canada has introduced a new program that allows customers to recycle their reusable shopping bags nationwide. Customers can send their extra or damaged Walmart reusable blue bags to TerraCycle, who will either clean and donate them to charity partners like Food Banks Canada, or recycle them. The recycled bags will be turned into raw materials that can be used for making items such as shipping pallets and outdoor furniture. Walmart Canada's senior manager of sustainability, Jennifer Barbazza, stated that this recycling pilot program gives Canadians the opportunity to give their unwanted bags a second life, preventing them from cluttering their homes or ending up in landfills. Customers who wish to participate can register for the program on TerraCycle's website. Bags can be sent in a box or shipping envelope, with a minimum requirement of five bags per shipment, and the program includes a free shipping label. Enrollment restrictions apply, and customers may be placed on a waitlist if the program reaches capacity. The initiative follows Canada's ban on single-use plastic bags in December 2022, which also included restrictions on straws and cutlery. Despite this, Walmart Canada had already stopped providing plastic bags in April of the same year, aiming to prevent more than 680 million plastic bags from being used annually.
